Ken Bruce began his career as a broadcaster for the Hospital Broadcasting Service in Glasgow. Later in 1977, he became a staff announcer for BBC Radio 4 in Scotland and TV continuity for BBC Two. After the death of David Findlay, he took over the Radio 2 Ballroom presentation from 1980 to 1982. In January 1982, Bruce became a regular presenter on Radio 2 and continued his show on Radio Scotland.

He later left Radio Scotland and took over the Radio 2 breakfast show from Terry Wogan. In April 1986, he left the show and began hosting mid-morning shows until late March 1990.
