In 1960, he started his music career professionally when he met Berry Gordy Jr. He had been searching for talented songwriters to start his new record company, Motown Records. Dozier was a member of Holland-Dozier-Holland, the production and songwriting team responsible for much of the Motown Sound and numerous hit records. Dozier worked as a music arranger and producer along with Brian Holland; however, Eddie was responsible for concentrating on vocal production and lyrics. 

Before the trio started working together as a production and songwriting team for Motown, Dozier recorded a few unsuccessful records for various Detroit labels. They first worked with an American Vocal girl group named Martha and The Vandellas, and their early hits included Come and Get These Memories, Quicksand, and Heatwave. In 1964,Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote and produced a song for The Supremes titled Where Did Our Love Go, which became the first of ten number-one pop hits.

After that, in 1968, Holland-Dozier-Holland left Motown and formed Invictus and Hot Wax labels, and then Dozier started recording as an artist on their labels.
