In the 1992 NBA Draft, he was chosen by the Golden State Warriors with the 24th overall pick. During his rookie season, he played 69 of the 77 games and averaged 15.4 points per game. From 1993 to 1994, as the Warriors under the leadership of Sprewell and power forward Chris Webber, NBA Rookie of the Year, he topped the league in games played and minutes played per game. On December 1, 1997, a significant blemish on the career of Sprewell occurred when he attacked head coach P.J. Carlesimo during a Warriors practice in Oakland.
Carlesimo yelled at Sprewell to make crisper passes, but Sprewell gave the impression he was not interested in the criticism of the coach and told the coach to stay away. Carlesimo decided to approach; Sprewell then allegedly threatened to kill him and dragged him backwards by his throat until his assistant coaches and teammates pulled him off. He returned about 20 minutes after changing and showering and accosted Carlesimo again.
He briefly struck Carlesimo’s right cheek before the other coaches drew him away again. Sprewell was suspended for 10 games without pay. Following a public outcry, the Warriors voided the remainder of his contract, which included $23.7 million over three years, and the NBA suspended him for a year. Sprewell took the case to arbitration, and the contract voiding was overturned, but the league suspended him for the rest of the season without pay, which amounted to 68 games.
He was also charged with reckless driving for his part in a 90 mph crash that injured two people. He spent three months under house arrest as part of a no-contest plea. Due to an NBA lockout, until February 1999, Sprewell continued playing after the Warriors traded him to the New York Knicks for Chris Mills, Terry Cummings, and John Starks. He participated in 37 games for the Knicks that season, starting off the bench in all but four of them.
With Sprewell, Ewing, and shooting guard Allan Houston in the starting lineup for the 1999-2000 season, the Knicks went 50-32, which earned them the third seed in the Eastern conference. He averaged 18.6 points per game, then in 2000-2001, Sprewell took over as the leader of the Knicks after Ewings moved to the Seattle SuperSonics, posting 17.7 points and making his lone All-Star appearance that season. He joined the league’s top-scoring trio in the 2003-2004 season, with star power Forward Kevin Garnett and point Guard Sam Cassell.
On October 31, 2004, the Minnesota Timberwolves made a three-year $21 million contract extension and salary cut offer to Sprewell. Moreover, Sprewell’s agent, Bob Gist, claimed that his client would prefer to retire than play for the NBA minimum wage one month into the 2005-2006 season without a contract. Also, in 2006, Sprewell received contracts from the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, considered heavy favourites to win the NBA championship. But Sprewell failed to respond and remained a free agent as the season closed.
